Opening or moving a shop at short notice: signage, we have moved notices and opening-day flyers in a hurry

When the keys arrive before the signs do

Shop openings in Singapore often run on short notice. A landlord hands over a unit earlier than expected, a renovation finishes a week ahead of schedule, or a lease ends and the business has a fortnight to move to a new address. The fit-out, the licences and the stock usually take priority. The printed items that tell customers you exist, or that you have moved, get left until the last few days.

This guide is about those last few days. It covers which items to print first, what a print shop can realistically turn around for an opening, and how to handle the awkward overlap when you are leaving one location and opening another.

Priority order: what customers see first

With limited time, print in the order customers will encounter things:

  1. Temporary shopfront signage. A banner or printed vinyl over the shop front so passers-by know what the unit is, even if the permanent signboard is still being made.
  2. Notices at the old location. If you are moving, a clear "We have moved" notice with the new address and a map.
  3. Opening hours and contact details. A door sticker or an A3 poster inside the glass.
  4. Opening-day flyers or vouchers. For distribution in the neighbourhood and for the first customers.
  5. Updated name cards and stationery. These can follow a few days later.

Permanent signboards, especially lightboxes and three-dimensional lettering, take longer and are a separate trade. Many malls and some HDB shophouses have rules on signage design and approval, so confirm with the landlord or management before ordering anything that goes on the facade.

Temporary signage that looks deliberate

A temporary sign does not need to look temporary. A well-printed banner with the shop name, a one-line description and "Opening soon" or "Now open" gives the right impression for the few weeks until the permanent sign is installed.

  • PVC banner with eyelets: the fastest option, usually same day for standard sizes. Good for hoarding, railings and the shop front during renovation.
  • Window vinyl: printed or cut vinyl applied to the glass. Looks more finished, and a print shop can often produce it within a day. Installation takes extra time.
  • Foam board or poster in the window: quick, and fine for an A1 opening announcement behind glass.

Measure the space before ordering. A banner that is 20 cm too wide for the hoarding is a common and avoidable problem. For what large format can turn around in a day, see our guide to rush banner and backdrop printing.

"We have moved" notices at the old address

If you are relocating, regular customers will keep coming to the old address for weeks. A good notice turns that visit into a redirect, and a careless one loses the customer.

  • Put the new address in large text, with the unit number and the nearest MRT station or landmark.
  • Add a simple map or directions if the new place is within walking distance.
  • Include a QR code linking to the map location.
  • State the date of the move and the opening date at the new place, if there is a gap.
  • Print on a weather-resistant material if the notice will be outside. Laminated paper or a corrugated plastic board holds up better than plain paper in Singapore's rain and humidity.

Ask the landlord of the old unit whether you can leave the notice up after you hand back the keys, and for how long. Print a few smaller copies for nearby shops or the building management office who may get asked where you went.

Opening-day flyers and vouchers

Flyers and vouchers for an opening are among the quickest items to print. Standard A5 or A6 flyers on a digital press can be ready the same day if the file arrives early. A few points help them work:

  • Make the offer specific and give it an end date, so customers come in during the opening period.
  • Number vouchers if you want to track how many were used and stop copies. Numbering adds little time on a digital press.
  • Check distribution rules. Where you can hand out flyers and what must be on them is regulated in Singapore. Check before you send staff out with a stack.

Updating stationery and cards

A new address means new name cards, letterheads, invoices and stamps. These can wait a few days after opening, but not much longer, because customers and suppliers will start using whatever address is printed on the last card they received.

Express name cards can usually be printed within a day once the artwork is updated. Our article on last-minute business cards covers what to expect. For the period in between, small printed address stickers to put on existing stationery are an acceptable stopgap. They look much better than a handwritten correction.

Openings in malls and shopping centres

Opening inside a mall adds a layer of rules that a street-front shop does not face. Most mall management teams have a fit-out handbook covering hoarding graphics, signage, window displays and what tenants may stick on the glass. Read it before you order anything for the shop front.

  • Hoarding graphics: many malls require a printed hoarding during fit-out, and some specify the design template, the material and the approval process. Approval can take days, so submit the artwork early even if the printing itself is fast.
  • Installation times: work inside a mall is often restricted to hours outside trading time. Your printer's installer may need a permit to work after closing, arranged through the mall.
  • Directory and wayfinding: the mall usually handles its own directory boards. Ask when your shop will be added, and use your own flyers and social posts to fill the gap.
  • Promotional standees: pull-up banners outside the shop line may not be allowed in common areas without permission.

Build those approval steps into your schedule. A banner that can be printed in three hours is no help if the mall takes four days to approve the design.

A three-day print schedule for an opening

DaySend to printCollect or install
Day 1 morningTemporary banner, "We have moved" notice, door opening-hours stickerBanner and notice by evening
Day 2 morningFlyers, vouchers, A1 window posterInstall banner; put up notice at old address
Day 3 morningName cards, address stickers, window vinyl if neededCollect flyers and cards; start distribution

The schedule works only if the artwork is ready. Prepare all files at once, with the new address checked by two people, before Day 1. Our same-day printing checklist helps avoid the most common file problems.
